Summer of 2004 P2 Intern Program Case summaries In 2004, 25 students from Iowa universities and colleges joined the DNR's Pollution Prevention Intern program. During their 12-week internships, students researched methods of reducing waste and preventing pollution at their host companies, and compared the costs of current procedures and proposed practices. The following case studies demonstrate the intern recommendations and company efforts, with impressive environmental and economic results. All case summaries are in PDF format.
American Ordnance: Assess air compressor systems for leaks and implement repairs to reduce compressed air losses
and associated energy use.
Archer Daniels Midland: Evaluate material management and implement a tracking and measurement system
for wastes and emissions.
CURRIES-GRAHAM: Reduce the solvent waste generated in the welding and seam filling process.
Dial: Assess the waste stream and initiate a composting program for feasible waste materials.
Equistar Chemicals: Develop tools to control emissions.
Fansteel Wellman Dynamics: Research the use of non-hazardous or less hazardous materials for chrome
corrosion protection coating.
Federal-Mogul: Evaluate measures to enhance the wastewater treatment system.
John Deere Foundry: Survey and optimize the compressed air system.
Lennox Manufacturing: Prevent the loss of oils and lubricants.
Maytag-Amana: Optimize the operation of a closed loop water cooling system.
Metzeler: Evaluate improvements in the coating and adhesive process that will result in waste reduction.
Osceola Foods: Evaluate the wastewater pretreatment system.
Pearson: Develop energy conservation and waste reduction strategies.
Pella Corp.: Evaluate reduction of compressed air demand and other energy saving projects.
Procter and Gamble: Update the water distribution mapping system and implement water conservation projects.
Quality Chef Foods: Evaluate measures to enhance the wastewater treatment system.
RMT: Improve coal flow distribution and thereby reduce emissions at the M.L. Kapp Generating Station
in Clinton.
Sara Lee Foods: Evaluate water reuse and other conservation opportunities.
Terra Industries: Minimize oil losses and ammonia emissions.
Textron Fastening Systems: Complete an energy management study.
Titan Tire: Reduce carbon black waste and improve recycling of landfilled items.
Wells' Dairy: Complete a water conservation study and wastewater reduction study.
Winnebago Industries: Reduce raw material demands in the fiberglass production operations.
