Pleasant Creek State Recreation Areas is home to a 410-acre lake surrounded
by 1,517 acres of public land open year round for a variety of recreational
activities, contributes to the economic vitality of the region and adds to
the quality of life for visitors and area residents.
- Idea for a recreation area at Pleasant Creek originated in the
early 1960s in a desire to develop lake recreation in the Cedar Rapids – Waterloo
area
- Iowa Electric and Light and Power Company was in the planning stage for
its Duane Arnold Atomic Energy Center near Palo, Iowa. The power plant needed
a
supplemental water supply when flows in the Cedar River were minimal.
- An artificial lake could provide both a supplemental water supply
for the power plant & at the same time provide regional recreation
opportunities so the Iowa Conservation Commission and the Iowa Electric
Light and Power
Company jointly developed the lake.
