Grassland Management for Bowl Area

Continue to mow and bail vegetation in the bowl area in strips grassland management for bowl area(outlined in green). The strips will continue to be between 9 and 10 feet wide, depending on the width of the mower and the mowing height will be 6 inches or higher. This retains the current management of the bowl. The amount of area with strips of un-mowed grass less than 9 feet wide will be minimized. The area outlined in yellow will also be mowed and bailed. The strips in this area will be two mower swaths or about 18 feet wide. No more than 50% of the area will be mowed in a year. The following year the strips left the previous year will be mowed. Mowing will be used to control tree and shrub encroachment.

The DNR with the help of volunteers will continue to monitor the Henslow’s sparrow and other grassland bird species during the breeding season. This information will allow us to determine the effects of the management. If it appears that the population of Henslow’s is declining under the current management regime, modifications will be made to protect the breeding grassland birds.
