Honey Creek Project History and Updates

Iowa first imagined a “destination” state park at Rathbun Lake more than three decades ago.

In 1974, the state purchased land on the northern edge of Lake Rathbun for a lodge and resort complex.

Although lack of funding delayed development, the Department of Natural Resources continued to develop plans for a “flagship state park” to provide a more diverse outdoor vacation experience for Iowans. The concept of Honey Creek Resort State Park was born.

Funding Arrives

The 2006 Iowa General Assembly passed a $28 million revenue-bonding package to fund construction of a lodge/conference center, indoor water park and an 18-hole golf course.

Additionally, the Legislature appropriated $3.0 million, with private-fund matching of more than $4.0 million, to pay for necessary roads, utilities and other recreational facilities on the site. Funding also came from other public and private sources.

Partnerships Make It Happen

Honey Creek Resort is a reality partly because of the local partnerships in Appanoose and Monroe counties. In-kind contributions, valued at more than $2 million, include: water service from Rathbun Regional Water Association; electrical facilities from Chariton Valley Electric Cooperative; and telecommunications from Iowa Telecom. Additional financial assistance and support have been provided by the Rathbun Lake Resort Committee, Appanoose and Monroe counties, and private individuals.

Professional Expertise Lead Development

Central Group Companies of St. Cloud, Minnesota is responsible for managing Honey Creek Resort. Their professional expertise will ensure a first-class experience for guests. TSP Engineering, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, leads the project's design. Hansen Company of Johnston is constructing the great lodge, hotel, water park and conference center.
