City of Rolfe Discharges Wastewater into Pilot Creek
Posted: October 23, 2009

ROLFE - Untreated wastewater is being discharged to Pilot Creek in Pocahontas County following an equipment failure at the city of Rolfe's wastewater pump station.

The discharge began overnight when a pump failed after experiencing electrical problems. Typically two pumps operate at the pump station, but the other pump is being repaired after sustaining a lightning strike in September.

An electrician has been called to repair the failed pump. The discharge is ongoing until repairs are made; samples will be taken today.

The city estimates 50,000 gallons of wastewater are pumped through the station daily, although the exact amount discharged is unknown.

The wastewater is discharging into Pilot Creek. People and pets should avoid the area.

The DNR recommends that facilities have an additional backup pump for situations when primary pumps fail.
