Otter Season Closed Wednesday

DES MOINES - The otter quota has filled and the season is closed as of 6 p.m., Wednesday, beginning the 48 hour grace period for trappers to report any animals to a conservation officer and receive their proper tags. The grace period officially ends at 6 p.m., Dec. 4.

The 48-hour grace period allows trappers time to move their traps from areas likely frequented by otters.

Otters trapped after the grace period must be turned over to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.




Bobcat Season Closed Saturday

DES MOINES - The bobcat quota has filled and the season is closed as of 9 p.m., Saturday, beginning the 48 hour grace period for trappers to report any animals to a conservation officer and receive their proper tags. The grace period officially ends at 9 p.m., Nov. 30.

The 48-hour grace period only applies to trappers, to allow time to move their traps from areas likely frequented by bobcats. Hunters are not allowed a grace period.

Bobcats trapped after the grace period must be turned over to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The bobcat season was open in the southern two tiers of counties and limited to one bobcat per furharvester, regardless if it was hunted or trapped.

The otter trapping season remains open statewide until the quota of 500 otters is reached.




Bobcat, Otter Seasons Nearing Quota

DES MOINES - Furharvesters have reported harvesting 163 bobcats and 361 otters as of 9 a.m. Wednesday. The DNR has a quota of 200 bobcats and 500 otters for the season.

Once the quotas are reached, the season closes and a 48-hour grace period begins to allow time for trappers to move their traps from areas likely frequented by bobcats and otters. The 48-hour grace period only applies to trappers. Hunters are not allowed the grace period.

The harvest quota numbers are updated regularly by calling the Iowa DNR at 515-281-5918. Furharvesters are encouraged to check the harvest totals daily.

Once the grace period ends, all bobcats and otters must be turned over to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

DES MOINES - Furharvesters have reported harvesting 132 bobcats and 289 otters taken as of 11 a.m. Friday. The DNR has a quota of 200 bobcats and 500 otters for the season. Once the quotas are reached, a 48-hour grace period begins.

The harvest quota numbers are updated regularly by calling the Iowa DNR at 515-281-5918.

The 48-hour grace period only applies to trappers, to allow time to move their traps from areas likely frequented by bobcats and otters. Hunters are not allowed a grace period.

Once the grace period ends, all bobcats and otters must be turned over to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
