New Storm Lake Marina Dedication June 23
Des Moines - From an eyesore to a blessing for boaters, the new Storm Lake Marina will be formally dedicated at a special ceremony June 23, 3:30 p.m., announced the Iowa DNR. The new marina replaces a worn out facility that offered little other than a boat ramp and repair services to the 3,100-acre lake's boaters. After two years in construction and about $3.1 million, the site now provides just about everything the busy lake's skippers need, just off Hwy. 110 on the southwest corner of the lake. "After deepening the bay and removing the island, the marina supports 84 slips for seasonal renting. New boat ramps, ample parking and courtesy docks make day-use of the lake a breeze. The large boat repair/sales building and modern concession facility with restrooms, supplies, and fuel availability are all vital essentials boaters need to enjoy their outings," described Pat Boddy, deputy director of the DNR Boddy, who will lead the dedication event, explained how the state was able to complete the project during tough economic times. "We started when times were better and earmarked the money back then to produce this top notch facility. Funding came from the marine fuel tax, the U.S. Coast Guard, and from DOT's park and institutional road fund, so no general fund tax dollars were necessary," said Boddy. All of the work was completed by about 10 different Iowa contractors, and the docks were built in Ida Grove by Midwest Industries (Shore Station). Storm Lake Mayor Jon Kruse joined Boddy in encouraging the public to attend the dedication and collect their commemorative gift before coming to the Lake Preservation Association's annual picnic at the Sunrise Pointe Golf Clubhouse, beginning at 6 that evening.
