Fayette County Teens Plead Guilty in Deer Poaching Case
Posted: June 3, 2009
WEST UNION - Two Fayette County teenagers pleaded guilty Tuesday to abandonment of wild game after killing a deer, shooting a rifle across a highway and discharging a rifle within 200 yards of an inhabited dwelling or feed lot. The incident happened in late December 2008, near Wadena.
Paul "P.J." Grine, 17, of Lamont, and John Wayne Hayes, 16, of Arlington, each paid more than $1,500 in fines and civil penalties. A rifle and the deer rack were forfeited. Their hunting privileges may also be suspended.
The guilty pleas were the result of a four month investigation led by the State Conservation Officer Dave Elledge, with the assistance of the Fayette County Attorney's Office.
On May 22, DNR Conservation Officers, Iowa State Patrol Troopers, a Fayette County Deputy and the Assistant County Attorney served search warrants at the subjects' two residences. The charges were filed based on the evidence found there and from other parts of the investigation. The contents of the search warrants have been sealed.
