About Face: DNR to Continue Releasing Water from Lake Darling
Posted: July 1, 2009
BRIGHTON - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has decided to not close the outlet gate and allow Lake Darling to refill this summer after further discussion with engineers and staff at the park. The DNR will keep the gate open and allow the rainfall and runoff to exit the lake.
The DNR had initially decided to hold water in the lake through Labor Day, but after hearing from engineers about how that could potentially delay the lake improvement project the department had a change of heart.
"The DNR is investing more than $5 million in this lake improvement project and after looking at the short term benefits that we could achieve for our park users by holding water, we decided that the best course would be to stay with the original plan," said Kevin Szcodronski, chief of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources State Parks Bureau.
Work on Lake Darling will last into the fall of 2010. The project includes deepening the lake shoreline, reconstructing the dam, adding in lake fish habitat and working on sediment basins in the watershed. The DNR has been working for years with private landowners to add water protecting structures in the watershed on specifically identified areas.
The project timeline calls for the lake to begin refilling in the spring of 2011.
