Review Safe Hunting Practices, Deer Hunters Urged
Posted: December 8, 2009
As the first shotgun season comes to a close and the second season gets underway, the DNR would like to remind hunters to remember the basics of hunter safety.
- Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction
- Don't shoot at running deer; take the extra time to wait for the deer to stop so that you have a nice clear, safe shot. Be sure to identify what is beyond your target.
- When hunting from an elevated stand always maintain 3 points of contact when you are going in and out of the stand. Be sure to use a full body harness and always use a haul line to get your gear in and out of the stand.
- Wear plenty of solid blaze orange. Visibility is extremely important. A hat is not enough make sure to have a solid blaze orange coat, jacket, or vest on as well.
- Plan your hunt, hunt your plan - know where members of your hunting party are at, at all times.
Now that the winter weather has arrived, be sure to be extra careful when carrying a firearm from one location to another. Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and when crossing obstacles take the extra time to unload the firearm to avoid an accidental discharge.
"Deer hunting in Iowa is a great tradition with family and friends," said Megan Wisecup, recreational safety programs supervisor with the DNR. "We want everyone to have a fun and successful season and most of all return home safely after each hunt."
