Iowa DNR Interactive Mapping, Help Files
The Recreation Map
Plan your Iowa outdoor recreation trip. Locate a place to hunt, fish, or canoe. Find the nearest hospital, hotel, restaurant, or golf course. View transportation data in other states. Print out a travel map.
With the exception of the Basic Map and Air Photography Viewer, the Recreation Map is the only interactive map created exclusively for the public. This website will give you the latest spatial information on Iowa outdoor recreation.
Unlike the other interactive maps, the Recreation Map provides mapping data for the 48 contiguous USA states. City, interstate, and highway data is available for these states, making this map usable for traveling to or from Iowa.
Some of the tourist-related data on this map was provided in cooperation with the
Iowa Workforce Development agency. This shared dataset includes locations for hotels, restaurants, hospitals, golf courses, bowling alleys and more. You'll find boating and fishing access points, trout streams, state parks, state preserves, public prairies, and reservable campground areas, linked to the Iowa DNR
Online Reservation System. You'll also find the best Iowa hunting data, including the most current DNR-owned public lands and wildlife management area boundaries, as well as 2004 natural color air photography, 2002 color infrared (CIR) air photography, and 1:24,000 topographic contour maps.
The Iowa DNR Recreation Map will keep growing as requests for recreation-like data are made, and subsequently, made spatially available through GIS technologies. Keep visiting this website for
new updates to the Recreation Map and other IDNR interactive maps. If you have any comments regarding data that you would like to see on the Recreation Map, please send them to Chris Kahle at
