Snowmobile Education Program

The Iowa snowmobile education course is designed to teach students the principles of safe snowmobiling and how snowmobiling affects other people and the environment.

The following age restrictions apply to persons operating a snowmobile on public property.

  • Persons under 12 must be accompanied by a qualified person riding on the same snowmobile.
  • Persons 12 to 15 must have a valid safety certificate and be under the direct supervision of a qualified person.
  • Persons 16 to 17 may operate unsupervised but must have a valid safety certificate.
  • Persons 18 and older may operate without a safety certificate.

Students can either attend an eight-hour instruction session or complete a home study course. Students must complete a written exam with a minimum score of 80%. The education manual reviews the basics of snowmobiling including: operation, maintenance, environmental impacts, regulations, ethics and winter survival. There is a $5 fee for this course.

For class information, contact the Recreational Safety Coordinator at 515/281-5918.
