BEDROCK MUNICIPAL WELL SAMPLING PROJECT DISCONTINUED
The contract between the Underground Storage Tank (UST) Fund and University
Hygienic Laboratory (UHL) to sample municipal water supplies within one mile of
leaking underground storage tank (LUST) bedrock sites was NOT renewed for
2004. In other words, the mass sampling of potentially effected public water
supplies will no longer be conducted by the UST Fund/DNR/UHL. Sampling public
water supplies must be incorporated into individual granular and nongranular
site groundwater sampling events by the certified groundwater professional
project manager.
As part of the Risk-Based Corrective Action process, any public water supply
well located within one mile of a LUST site which is in a granular or
nongranular bedrock area must be sampled for chemicals of concern [Refer to
135.10(3)"g"2].
A LUST site that is evaluated using special bedrock procedures, for which
municipal well sampling data are needed for risk classification or
reclassification purposes, will need to include public water sampling as part of
the individual site evaluation. With the cancellation of the UHL public water
supply sampling contract the certified groundwater professional project manager
will be responsible for conducting the water supply sampling.
If you are completing a Tier 2 or annual monitoring for a bedrock site, we
strongly recommend reviewing the files for nearby LUST sites to see if the
affected municipal wells have already been sampled this year and in subsequent
years. Data collected to date under the UST Fund/UHL contract may be found at
