Wastewater Discharge at Diamondhead Lake
DEXTER – Friday morning, wastewater from a sanitary sewer line began bubbling up from an underground pipe on the west side of Diamondhead Lake in Guthrie County.
It appears the pipeline leak occurred after the rural electric cooperative installed a power pole.
An unknown amount of wastewater is discharging about 300 feet from the lake near the 8400 block of Lakeshore Drive. It had not yet reached the lake Friday morning. Residents should avoid swimming and wading near that area.
The Diamondhead Lake Sanitary District is scheduling repairs as soon as a contractor can make them, but expects the discharge to be ongoing until at least Saturday.
People should keep children and pets away from the area until after repairs are completed.
People swimming, boating or wading in the lake should be careful not to swallow any water, and should thoroughly wash with soap after water contact. Fish are safe to eat, but should be rinsed before cleaning.
Residents and contractors should call Iowa One Call at 811 before digging. Iowa One Call is a free service designed to protect Iowans by locating underground utilities. Find them at www.iowaonecall.com
The DNR will continue to monitor the situation.
