Peregrine Falcon Banding Underway
Posted: 06/04/2013

Peregrine falcon nesting is in full swing across the eastern half of Iowa, including at a new cliff territory at Bellevue State Park bringing the number of peregrine falcon territories to 16 around the state.

The young appear to be about 21 days and will need another 21 days before attempting their first flight. If falcons survive their first year, they average about nine years in the wild.

Last year, 15 territorial pairs provided 13 successful nests with 34 young produced.

Cliff nesting falcon territories in Iowa are at Waukon Junction, Lansing and Agee’s Bluff.

Falcon pairs have been found at US Bank, in Cedar Rapids, American Enterprise building and the State Capitol in Des Moines, Bunge America Elevator, in McGregor, Wisconsin Bridge, at Dubuque, ADM Plant and ML Kapp Power Plant, in Clinton, MidAmerican Energy headquarters and I-80 Bridge, in the Quad Cities, MidAmerican Energy’s Louisa Generating Station, in Louisa County, Great River Bridge, in Burlington and Alliant Energy, in Chillicothe.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will band falcons at 10 a.m., June 12, at American Enterprise building, 606 5th Ave. in Des Moines. This is the 20th anniversary of falcons nesting at this site, which has fledged 55 young. The banding is open to the public.

Des Moines Loses Male Falcon

The territory at the State Capitol lost its male falcon over the weekend. A necropsy is planned.

This bird fledged from American Enterprise building in Des Moines in 2008 and had provided for seven young since 2010. The remaining female appears to be succeeding in providing prey for her brood of two. It is hoped that another male will move to this site soon.
