Iowa Students Receive National Honors for Poetry
Posted: 03/25/2013
Two Iowa students have received national recognition for poetry they submitted to the River of Words® (ROW) Environmental Poetry and Art Contest. The Iowa students’ poems were selected from thousands of entries and recognized as national finalists.

Cori Dahlby-Albright, 11, from Grinnell, was recognized for her poem “Spring Thunderstorm.” Tessa Mayer, 13, from Cambridge, was recognized for her poem “A Leaf.”

“Having Iowa students selected as finalists really shows the talent of Iowa’s youth and their appreciation for nature,” said Jacklyn Gautsch, Iowa DNR River of Words® coordinator.

The annual River of Words® Contest is sponsored by St. Mary’s College in California and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. River of Words was founded to give new life to teaching art and poetry through watershed exploration.  National winners and finalists will be posted in April on the River of Words website at http://www.stmarys-ca.edu/center-for-environmental-literacy/river-of-words.

Following the national competition, all Iowa entries are returned to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, which holds an annual statewide contest.  For more information about Iowa ROW and for a list of the 2013 Iowa winners posted in May, visit www.iowadnr.gov/riverofwords.
