Wastewater Discharge to Southeast Corner of Big Spirit Lake
Wednesday, June 26, 2013 by Iowa DNR
ORLEANS – Shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday, a resident of the city of Orleans reported an overflowing manhole in the 13700 block of Sunset Drive, on the southeast side of Big Spirit Lake.
The Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District inspected the area and found that about 21,000 gallons of untreated wastewater had discharged to a storm sewer. The wastewater then flowed into the lake about 1400 feet northeast of the Orleans beach.
In less than an hour, the sanitary district stopped the discharge. The district discovered a pipeline below the manhole had collapsed. The district is working to repair the pipeline.
The DNR is taking water samples Wednesday for testing. DNR staff recommends residents stay away from the area of the discharge for 48 hours.
The DNR will continue to monitor the situation.
