EPC to Decide on Air, Water and Land Monitoring Contracts at May 21 Meeting

WINDSOR HEIGHTS – Contracts to monitor air, water and land quality, and stream levels are on the May 21 agenda for the Environmental Protection Commission.

Commissioners will be asked to approve a contract for 16 stream gages which track stream levels and help predict the height of floods.

If approved, another contract will provide grants to counties to help private well owners test their groundwater, identify problems with existing wells and help improve or plug wells that have poor water quality.

In other action, commissioners will decide on several contracts with the University of Iowa State Hygienic Laboratory to test for:
  • environmental contaminants on the landscape,
  • air quality contaminants such as sulfate, nitrate, asbestos, lead and manganese,  and
  • water quality in streams.
An additional contract with the hygienic laboratory is proposed for field and lab tests to ensure drinking water, wastewater, solid waste and other industrial or commercial facilities comply with state laws.

A half day of commissioner training will precede the business meeting, beginning at 1 p.m. May 20 at the DNR Air Quality Building, 7900 Hickman Road in Windsor Heights. Commissioners will meet for dinner at the Iowa Machine Shed Restaurant, 11151 Hickman Road in Urbandale at 6 p.m.

The business meeting, May 21, will also be at the DNR Air Quality Building, starting at 10 a.m. with public participation scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Commissioners have several appointments during the day, starting at 8:30 a.m. when they will be introduced to DNR leadership staff. A demand for hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. for Kossuth County and Heritage Management Group. At 2 p.m., a referral to the Attorney General is scheduled. At 2:30 p.m., the Iowa Learning Farms will demonstrate land stewardship practices as part of the Conservation Station.
