DNR Pollution Prevention Intern Program Teams with 18 Companies for 2013
4/18/2013 12:18:30 PM by Iowa DNR
DES MOINES – The DNR has selected 18 businesses for its 2013 Pollution Prevention Intern Program, where college students help identify and implement pollution prevention strategies to increase efficiency, reduce costs and help meet environmental goals.

Since 2001, the Pollution Prevention Internship Program has saved more than 155 Iowa companies, hospitals, universities and government agencies more than $69.1 million.
Upper-level college and university students work on-site in paid internships at their host companies for 12 or 24 weeks.

Environmental benefits in the past 12 years include the reduction of:
  • more than 1.2 billion gallons of water
  • 204,502 tons of solid waste
  • 1.5 million gallons of hazardous waste
  • 327.8 million kilowatt hours of electricity
  • 7.7 million therms of energy.

The DNR’s Pollution Prevention Services provides confidential, non-regulatory, environmental technical assistance in the form of assessments, Environmental Management Systems development and workshops. These services are offered at no cost to help clients reduce costs through source-reduction strategies to improve process efficiency and reduce or eliminate waste.
