Wastewater Discharge in Wayne County
HUMESTON – Failure of equipment at a pumping station this morning caused a wastewater bypass in Wayne County southeast of Humeston.
The city discovered the pump failure at 7:30 a.m. and installed a portable pump by 8 a.m., stopping the discharge. City staff estimate about 10,000 gallons of untreated sewage reached a tributary of Ninemile Creek, which eventually flows to the South Fork of the Chariton River arm of Rathbun Lake.
The city operator collected water samples for testing. Repairs to the pump and float switch should be completed today. The city plans to install an autodialer alarm system next week.
