Bike Trail Should Be Avoided Due to Sewage Bypass
Posted: 04/24/2012
NEWTON – The City of Newton was notified of a bypass of raw sewage by a resident who discovered it about 6:30 a.m. today along the bike trail between Maytag Park and Newton High School.

The bypass is discharging at a rate of about 20 gallons per minute, across the ground and into Sievers Creek. The time when the discharge began is unknown.

The cause of the discharge is due to partial blockage of the sewer line downstream from the manhole. The city has contacted a contractor to clear the line later today.

Residents and pets should avoid the trail area east of Maytag Park and north of I-80 until further notice.

The DNR is monitoring the situation.
