Sludge Released From Rockwell City in Calhoun County
Posted: 01/27/2014
ROCKWELL CITY – The DNR received notice over the weekend that sludge from a wastewater treatment unit overflowed Friday night on the east side of Rockwell City.

The release occurred after a staff person left the treatment plant to fix a break in a water main, forgetting to turn off the sludge pump.

City officials estimate about 46,000 gallons of sludge were released, flowing under the road toward Lake Creek. Wastewater operators shut down the pump, stopped the flow and dammed the flow path after discovering the release Saturday morning. They removed the sludge from the ground, indicating an unknown amount reached the creek.

The DNR was on site Monday morning and found a small amount visible on top of the iced-over creek.

The DNR will continue to monitor the clean up and consider appropriate enforcement action.
