Bottled Water Recommended for Wellman Residents
WELLMAN – Residents of Wellman in Washington County should drink bottled water until repairs can be made on a broken line and water can be tested for safety.
A water line in the system burst Thursday bypassing the reverse osmosis system used to reduce nitrates in the water supply. Repairs are being made, but sampling needs to be done to make sure nitrates are at an acceptable level.
Although bottled water is recommended for everyone in the city until repairs can be made, nitrate in drinking water is a particularly serious health concern for infants less than six months old. Water, juice and formula for children under six months of age should not be prepared with tap water until the water can be adequately tested for safety. Boiling will not reduce the nitrate level and is not a safe alternative to using bottled water.
