Second DNR Water Samples Show Water Safe at Orleans Beach on Big Spirit Lake
ORLEANS – Tests of water samples the DNR took Thursday show levels of E. coli bacteria have dropped off rapidly after a wastewater discharge occurred Wednesday at the southeast corner of Big Spirit Lake.
Test results from the Orleans Beach area again confirm the water is safe for swimming.
“Our results showed 10 colonies per 100 milliliters of water,” said Bryon Whiting, environmental specialist at the DNR Spencer field office. “That’s even lower than the test results from Wednesday and well below the level of concern at 235 where DNR would issue a swimming advisory.”
A resident discovered the wastewater discharge Wednesday morning. The Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District quickly stopped the discharge and fixed the problem.
The DNR has concluded its sampling and monitoring efforts on this incident.
