McCloud Run Trout Stocking
Iowa’s southern-most trout stream has been restocked with 200 rainbow and 200 brook trout. The November 20 stocking was along the upper half of McLoud Run, which runs along Interstate 380 through northeast Cedar Rapids.
“The brook trout were stocked at the upper end of the stream, where the water is a little colder. A small spring enters near the upper end, too,” explained DNR fisheries biologist Paul Sleeper. “The browns and rainbows tend to migrate downstream. They can tolerate warmer water temperatures.”
Sleeper also dropped in eight 2-to-3 pound post-spawn brood fish, in the catch and release stream.
The trout, from the DNR’s Manchester hatchery, replace fish lost during a water main break late this summer. Chlorine in the treated water and subsequent earth work to repair the break caused the loss of about 80 trout.
