DNR Focuses on Bird Habitat at Farm Progress Show
Thursday, August 14, 2014 by Iowa DNR
BOONE – From pheasants to meadowlarks, turkeys to bobolinks, the DNR’s booth at the Farm Progress Show, Aug. 26 to 28, in Boone, will showcase the three habitat types birds need to thrive.

Grassy habitats, including hay land and small grains, are essential for pheasants, quail and other grassland birds. As those habitats have declined in Iowa, so have grassland birds.

All birds require winter shelter, suitable nesting habitat and a safe place for chicks to grow. The key is having the right plant species in the right place. Stop by the DNR booth at Conservation Central, lot 718, to learn more about getting the best mix of plants on your property to bring back the call of a bobwhite, the crow of a rooster or the melody from a meadowlark.

Check out cover crops, soil health tips and have a little fun during daily face-offs of “Farmer Feud” between ag groups and Future Farmers of America students at Conservation Central. Expert presentations on grain marketing, the new Haney soil health test, agro-forestry and more will also be featured.

Find the 12 partnering groups, and Farmer Feud and presentation schedules on the NRCS website at www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/detail/ia/home/?cid=STELPRDB1258112.
