Manure Applicator Training Begins in January
Thursday, December 12, 2013 by Iowa DNR
DES MOINES – Iowa manure applicators, confinement and commercial, should plan now to take training to renew their certificates by March 1.
Commercial applicators can take advantage of a Jan. 7 program offered from 9 a.m. to noon at 76 Iowa locations. Commercial applicators can also take training at three sessions in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Call the appropriate Iowa State University Extension and Outreach office by Dec. 30 to register to attend.
Confinement site applicators can take training at many county Extension offices from Jan. 14 to Feb. 26. Check the training schedule to pick a morning, afternoon or evening session.
Or, confinement site applicators can take a 10 a.m. to noon training while attending the Iowa Pork Congress Jan. 23 in Des Moines. Extension, the Iowa DNR and the Iowa Pork Producers’ Association are sponsoring this session. Commercial applicators have a similar opportunity Jan. 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. hosted by the Iowa Commercial Nutrient Applicators Association.
Applicators who work with mostly dry or solid manure may want to schedule their training at one of eight February workshops. These workshops specifically meet the needs of applicators who work with poultry, cattle or hog manure in a dry or solid form. They are open to both confinement and commercial applicators.
Complete the training, and mail the applications and fees for renewals to the DNR postmarked on or before March 1 to avoid a $12.50 late fee.
Check for training times and locations at www.agronext.iastate.edu/immag/mac.html
. More information about the program is available at www.iowadnr.gov/afo/
. Testing is available at six DNR field offices in lieu of training.
The DNR certified 2,538 commercial and 2,310 confinement site manure applicators in 2013. Certified applicators have completed a two- or three-hour training session or passed a test.
The DNR administers the manure applicator certification program in Iowa. ISU Extension and Outreach provides training opportunities.
