EPA will hold two public hearing on its proposed greenhouse gas (GHG) New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) for power plants. The hearings will be held on May 24, 2012, in Washington, DC, and in Chicago, IL. In addition, EPA announced that it is extending the comment period on the proposal to June 25, 2012.
The new standards will set national limits on the amount of carbon pollution future power plants can emit. The rule will apply only to new
fossil-fuel-fired electric utility generating units (EGUs). The rule will not apply to existing EGUs that are already operating or EGUs that will start construction over the next 12 months.
More information on the public hearings and proposed rule, called “Standards of Performance for Greenhouse Gas Emissions for New Stationary Sources: Electric Utility Generating Units”, is posted at: www.epa.gov/carbonpollutionstandard
. The proposed rule was published in the Federal Register on April 13, 2012 (available at http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2012-04-13/pdf/2012-7820.pdf
