Leaky Connection Sends Wastewater Towards, But Not Into, Storm Lake
STORM LAKE – The Southwest Shoreline Sanitary District notified the DNR about 10 a.m. today that untreated wastewater was leaking near the 200 block of Casino Road on the west side of Storm Lake.
“No sewage has entered the lake from above ground,” said Julie Sievers, a DNR environmental specialist. “The sanitary district has used sand bags and dirt to dam up the wastewater. However, there will be some seepage since the dam is within about 6 feet of the lakeshore.”
Sievers said they suspect a leak in a connection between a septic system and a force main. The sanitary district will dig up and repair the connection pipe. They will also take water samples for testing as a precaution.
She recommends that people with private docks in the immediate area stay out of the water until 48 hours after the break is fixed and the cleanup is complete.
