National Guard Recruits Invade Big Creek for Park Clean Up
Big Creek State Park will host more than 100 Iowa Army National Guard recruits on April 28, from 7:30 am – noon for a “Guard the Earth” event. The recruits, called Warriors, will be picking up trash and debris along the lake and trails to prepare the park for its busy season.
The recruits will be gathering at two locations – at the boat ramp on 100th Street on the west side and at the beach on the east side – to begin the clean up.
“This massive volunteer invasion is exactly what Big Creek needs to get ready for visitors,” said Chad Kelchen, park manager at Big Creek State Park.
The Warriors will be heading to boot camp this summer.
“Volunteerism and team work will help our Warriors succeed as they serve our country creating a life-long commitment to helping their communities,” said Captain George Mosby, Army National Guard Zone Commander.
Last year, 120 Warriors pulled invasive plant species near Big Creek State Park and add a rock surface to a trail at Ledges State Park.
