Diesel Fuel From Semi Accident in Polk County Reaches Tributary to White Oak Creek
Posted: 01/29/2013
DES MOINES – A vehicle accident on Interstate 35 north of Elkhart Exit 96 resulted in an unknown amount of diesel fuel released from a semi truck’s saddle tank. At 11:45 a.m. DNR staff confirmed diesel fuel had reached a flowing unnamed tributary to White Oak Creek in the South Skunk River watershed.

The fuel was contained with an earthen dam across the banks of the small creek. Crews are removing the truck, livestock trailer and cattle from the area. Several cattle were killed. It does not appear that fish or other aquatic life has been impacted.

Story County emergency management coordinator, Ankeny Fire Department and the Iowa State Patrol are assisting with the incident.

The DNR will monitor the site to determine if the stream has been impacted.
