Boat Involved in Fatal Collision Recovered

DES MOINES – A boat involved in a fatal boating collision Sunday evening has been recovered from the Des Moines River.

The 16-foot pleasure boat operated by Tony Starrett of Des Moines was pulled from the river just downstream from the Sixth Avenue Bridge. The vessel was heavily damaged on the right side. A Chris-Craft pleasure boat operated by Steven Mayo of Des Moines received less damage and is also being examined by the Iowa Department of Natural of Resources as part of a continuing investigation.

Both Tony Starrett, 46, and Steven Mayo, 54, have been charged with boating while intoxicated. Starrett’s alcohol level was .172 and Mayo’s was .129. The legal limit for boating is .08.

Tony Starrett’s brother, Kelly Starrett, 49, of West Des Moines was killed in the collision that occurred shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday between the Second Avenue and Sixth Avenue bridges on the Des Moines River.
