West Branch Man Survives Fall From Boat
Posted: 07/15/2013
WEST BRANCH – A West Branch man was able to make it to shore after falling from his boat and floating down river early Sunday morning.

A 911 call to Cedar County was received shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday reporting a man yelling for help and blowing an air horn near the Cedar Valley access on the Cedar River southwest of Tipton. Emergency personnel responding to the scene would see Trent Wright, 35, clinging to a 16-foot fishing boat on the opposite side of the river, but soon lost sight and could no longer hear him.

Wright was later found downstream on a bank of the river at approximately 3 a.m. by a DNR conservation officer and a Cedar County sheriff’s deputy where he appeared to show signs of hypothermia. He was transported by ambulance to University Hospitals in Iowa City where he was treated and released.

It is still unknown how Wright fell into the water. He was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident, but the required safety equipment was on board the boat which was also recovered downstream.
