DNR Encourages Iowa Students to Enter River of Words Competition
Posted: 10/11/2012
DES MOINES — The DNR is encouraging Iowa students to create artwork and poetry for the international River of Words competition.

The contest helps youth explore the natural and cultural history of their own watershed, expressing what they discover through poetry and art. Each April, eight U.S. winners, one international winner and a teacher are honored at an award ceremony at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

Iowa students ages 5 to 19 can submit entries until Dec. 1. Contest rules and entry forms are available at www.iowadnr.gov/riverofwords.

While students must submit their entries to the River of Words organization based in California, all Iowa entries will be sent back to the DNR for the statewide competition.

Winners of the statewide contest are included in a traveling exhibition. The 2012 exhibit has been featured at the Blank Park Zoo and the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center, and will travel to the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, Knoxville Public Library, Reiman Gardens and other locations.

River of Words is affiliated with the Library of Congress Center for the Book and sponsored in Iowa by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
