Governor's Awards Honor Iowa Environmental Leaders

DES MOINES — Twelve Iowa organizations and businesses will receive Environmental Excellence awards from Gov. Terry E. Branstad June 28 at the Wallace Building in Des Moines. The awards are the premier environmental honors in Iowa.

“The success of these organizations and businesses are just another example of the innovation Iowans put into action every day to not only be productive, but to protect our natural resources as well. The success of these projects inspire us as well as provide examples that others can use to improve their own operations,” said Gov. Branstad.

The recognition ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. in the Wallace Building Auditorium, located at 502 E. Ninth St. in Des Moines.

The awards program recognizes comprehensive environmental programs by organizations and businesses, along with special project awards in water quality, air quality, waste management, habitat restoration and development, energy efficiency and renewable energy, and environmental education.

The winners include:

Environmental Excellence Award:
City of Perry
Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids
Quaker Foods and Snacks, a division of PepsiCo, Cedar Rapids
The ReWall Company, LLC, Des Moines

Special Recognition in Water Quality:
Ajinomoto Heartland, Inc., Eddyville
Orange Elementary School, Waterloo

Special Recognition in Waste Management:
Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids

Special Recognition in Habitat Restoration/Development:
Diamond Conservation Fund, Dubuque
National Wild Turkey Federation, Woodburn

Special Recognition in Energy Efficiency/Renewable Energy:
Buchanan County Conservation Board, Hazelton
Des Moines Public Schools
Trees Forever, Marion

Special Recognition in Environmental Education:
Lowell Elementary Expanded Learning Program, Waterloo
