Wastewater Discharge into Raccoon River
Posted: 11/21/2013

Des Moines Public Works reported a wastewater discharge from a private company into an unnamed tributary of the Raccoon River to the DNR at 4:30 p.m. Wed.

The DNR investigated Thursday morning and verified the city’s report that the discharge was coming from The Park at Southern Hills Townhomes and Condominiums. The Park is located on Fox Run, near SW 30th Street in Des Moines.

The discharge site is about one to one-and-one-half miles from where the stream enters the river. After entering the Raccoon River, the discharge would be about three-fourths of a mile upstream from Des Moines Water Works.

The DNR has instructed the Park’s owner association to hire a contractor to stop the discharge on Thursday. The Des Moines Water Works has been notified.

The amount and how long the discharge has been occurring are unknown, although DNR staff estimates it is not more than 5 to 10 gallons per minute.

The DNR will take appropriate enforcement action and continue to monitor the cleanup.
