Workshop to Propose Primitive Paddle-In Campsites on Lake Red Rock Water Trail
DES MOINES - A workshop to discuss adding paddle-in campsites on the Lake Red Rock Water Trail is scheduled for 7 p.m., Jan. 17, in the Wallace State Office Building Auditorium, 502 East 9th Street, in Des Moines.
Last year, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation and the Red Rock Lake Association created the first paddle in campground in Iowa, the Hickory Ridge Wilderness Camp on Lake Red Rock.
This site has been used extensively by paddlers demonstrating a demand for primitive paddle-in camping opportunities. The Corps is reviewing their 25-year master plan for Lake Red Rock and has expressed interest in potentially developing similar sites.
Proposed sites would provide unique opportunities from individuals wanting a chance to paddle away from it all, to smaller groups getting geared up for a trip to the Boundary Waters.
Interested paddlers are encouraged to attend this workshop.
The workshop is organized by David Oliver and Diane Michaud Lowry, both from Ames, who assisted with the initial Lake Red Rock Water Trail designation.
