Environmental Protection Commission to Meet February 18
Posted: 02/13/2014
DES MOINES – The Environmental Protection Commission (EPC) will meet Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. to discuss air quality and water quality issues, among other items. The meeting will be held at the DNR’s Air Quality offices at 7900 Hickman Road in Windsor Heights.

The DNR’s Air Quality Bureau will present a revision to the State Implementation Plan for Muscatine. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) required that the Iowa DNR submit a revised plan that includes a modeling demonstration showing reductions needed to keep levels of fine particles in the Muscatine nonattainment area within the health standard set by the EPA in 2006. The EPA also asked for the inclusion of control measures to keep the area within the standard, as well as enforceable commitments to adopt and implement contingency measures if fine particles cannot be reduced to meet EPA’s heath standards.

Also up for an EPC decision is a contract amendment with the State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa for Rathbun Water Quality Monitoring that will provide data needed to develop a credible computer model of the lake-watershed system. The computer model will be used to guide future watershed planning and improvement strategies.

The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. Public comments are scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
