Becoming an Outdoors Woman - BOW Iowa

Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) is an international program aimed primarily at women, but is an opportunity for anyone 18 years or older to learn outdoor skills usually associated with hunting and fishing, but useful for many outdoor pursuits. Check out the BOW Brochure for more information!

The workshop is for you if...

  • you have never tried these activities, but have hoped for an opportunity to learn.
  • you are a beginner who hopes to improve your skills.
  • you know how to do some of these activities, but would like to try your hand at some new ones.
  • you are looking for the camaraderie of like-minded individuals.

[2018 July] Beyond BOW - Overland Camping

Join us for a full day of learning about overland camping!

This workshop will cover a variety of topics including but not limited to camp cooking, packing for short and long trips, fire building and safety, camping games, camping equipment and gear, and selecting camping destinations. Plan on being very active in this workshop. Fun and a good time is a requirement!

This workshop is designed for the entire family but keep in mind it may be a long day for children under the age of 10. We want to ensure everyone has a pleasant learning experience. Cost is $45 per person to attend. There is no charge for children under the age of 15 but they must attend with a registered adult. Please be sure to provide their name(s) and age(s) when prompted during the registration process. We will be providing a full meal, snacks and drinks during the workshop and want to have an accurate count to ensure we have plenty for everyone attending. For children 16 years of age or older or additional adults in your family, you will need to complete a separate full registration.

Join us for a wonderful weekend on the water in Shelby County!
The workshop will start at 7pm on Friday, August 24th, please make sure to eat dinner before registration.

We hope you'll join us for the full weekend, but if you're only able to join for a day, we've created registration options for all. Full registration includes instruction in all sessions, program materials, use of demonstration equipment, and breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday. The workshop is being held at Shelby County Conservation Nishna Bend Recreation Area and Prairie Rose State Park in Harlan, IA.

Full weekend registration - $75
Friday only - wine tasting & wind chimes - $10
Saturday only - kayaking trip & gourmet S'mores - $50
Sunday only - kayak fishing & Dutch Oven cooking - $20
Friday & Saturday - wine tasting, wind chimes & kayaking trip - $60
Saturday & Sunday - kayaking, kayak fishing and Dutch Oven cooking - $70

Women, Wine & Water -- August 24 - 26, 2018 > 

[2018 August] Intermediate Kayaking Workshop

Join us for a full day of learning on the water!

This workshop will cover a variety of topics including but not limited to kayak anatomy and equipment, paddling techniques, rescue skills, introduction to whitewater kayaking, river reading/maneuvers and trip planning. Some of the skills will be taught on land but the majority of time will be on the water. Plan on being very active in this workshop. You very well might get wet!

This workshop is designed for someone with previous recreational kayaking experience. Prior to the workshop, please make sure to get out and paddle in a recreational kayak.

Kayaks, paddles and personal flotation devices (PFDs) will be provided.

Location: Briggs Woods Park, Webster City, Iowa

[2018 October] Beyond BOW - Stream Fishing Workshop

Dates: October 19-21 Location: Paint Creek Lodge - Harpers Ferry

*Will include up to three nights lodging, meals, instruction and hands-on stream fishing opportunities - fly and spin cast.

[2018 November] Beyond BOW - Upland Bird Hunting Workshop

Dates: November 17-18
Location: Iowa County

*Will include optional lodging, meals, instruction and a mentored pheasant hunt
