Hiking & Biking in Iowa
hiking/biking/cross country skiing

Whether you want to enjoy the serenity of nature or experience the unique challenges of outdoor recreation, Iowa's beautiful trails will undoubtedly lead you on your journey.  Regardless of your preference; hiking, biking, cross country skiing, or mountain biking you will find trails in the Iowa state parks and forests that suit your needs.

The DNR Trails program is an environmental program designed to cultivate human connection to the outdoors.  It is rooted in land and water stewardship.  Program trail construction follows principles of sustainable design, incorporating techniques which reduce and prevent erosion and siltation into Iowa’s lakes and rivers.

Trails are among the finest treasures in Iowa.  Some of the best were built in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corps recognizable by worn but sturdy stone work.  Continuing that tradition, the DNR AmeriCorps Trail Crew works in parks across the state each summer repairing and building trails and trail infrastructure such as staircases, pedestrian bridges, retaining walls, and boardwalks.
