Springbrook Conservation Education Center - Fall

It’s autumn at Springbrook…

Leaves in various hues ranging from brilliant yellow to chocolate brown swirl and dance as they disconnect from their tree “mothers” and begin their descent. Soon they will blanket the earth, slowly decomposing and becoming the very soil that supports life in the forest.

Much like the leaves, the deer are also changing color, from summer’s reddish coat to a paler grey; camouflage against bare tree trunks and branches. Their coats are thickening, filling in with hollow hairs to insulate against cold winter winds ahead. Buck rubs and deer scrapes have begun to appear in the woods, as males signal territory and dominance.

Critters in the pond are moving more slowly, getting ready to hunker down in the mud beneath the water, waiting out the coming winter. Migrant birds have packed their bags and headed south, in search of something that Iowa will soon be lacking. Prairie plants have faded, turning their full attention to seed dispersal. Acorns and hickory nuts are being gathered and hidden away for days when food won’t be so abundant. Autumn afternoons offer the sweet last taste of summer, cooling down to crisp, clear nights that bring the first sparkling frost on the morning grass. Bundle up a bit…fall is all about layers ~ sweatshirts and jackets, thickening coats, and leaf covered trails!

The day is young, and there is so much left to discover! Come join us, or discover the mysteries in your own special place.

Be sure to check out our upcoming camp/workshop opportunities!
