Springbrook Conservation Education Center - Summer

Summer is upon us!

Cool water invites us to climb into kayaks and head off to explore the far reaches of the lake, in search of turtles and snakes. Along the edge kids are reaching in with nets and pulling out tadpoles, tiny snails and mysterious insects… it’s a whole different world under the water! A family of geese swims by in single file.

Later, we take to the woods, following tracks and turning over logs as the creatures that dwell beneath scurry from view. A doe and her fawn dash away when we get too near, making us realize there is so much more out here than we see. What a fun concept…let’s play a game where we try to use camouflage to hide. “Camouflage…1, 2, 3, 4…10! You have to be able to see me with at least one eye as you wait in your hiding place. I see a red hat behind that tree, and someone in blue on the ground behind the log. Aha, I didn’t see you until you moved a bit.”

What would it be like to have to hide without a moment’s notice, (from a predator that did not count to ten?) On the other hand, what would it be like to have to work so hard for your food? Thoughts of just how easy most of us have it begin to sink in, as we plop into chairs for a glass of lemonade and a sugar cookie.

Then it is back outside, heading for the archery range, or the atlatl field for a chance to try on the role of predator.

The day is young, and there is so much left to discover! Come join us, or discover the mysteries in your own special place.

Be sure to check out our upcoming camp/workshop opportunities!
