    Fishing Forecast

The sport fishery in the Nishna Bend Rec. Area Ponds were surveyed in 2011. Species present in that survey included largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, white crappie, channel catfish, common carp, gizzard shad, and bigmouth buffalo. Largemouth bass were of moderate abundance with all sizes up to 18-inches sampled. Bluegills were small and less than 7-inches and crappies were 8-inches. Channel catfish are stocked by the IDNR and 20 inch catfish are available. There were not a lot of quality sized fish in the population in part due to competition from rough fish in the pond. This will always be an issue given the proximity to the river.(2012)

Iowa-Caught Fish Are Safe to Eat, In Almost All Cases

The vast majority of Iowa’s streams, rivers and lakes offer safe and high-quality fish that pose little or no threat to human health if consumed. Some limitations may apply for young children and pregnant women. Here’s a Fish Consumption Fact Sheet from the Iowa DNR and the Iowa Dept. of Public Health for more information.
