The fishery in Folsum was last sampled by the IDNR back in June of 2012 following the flood of 2011. Catchable size largemouth bass 13 to 17-inches were collected. The bluegills sampled were 6 to 7-inches. Both black and white crappies were sampled. Channel catfish were stocked in 2015 to improve their numbers. This survey also detected the re-infestation of common carp, shortnose gar, and yellow bass into the lake. Folsum Lake like a lot of the borrow lakes along I-29 tends to provide crappie, largemouth bass, and channel catfish.(2016)

Iowa-Caught Fish Are Safe to Eat, In Almost All Cases

The vast majority of Iowa’s streams, rivers and lakes offer safe and high-quality fish that pose little or no threat to human health if consumed. Some limitations may apply for young children and pregnant women. Here’s a Fish Consumption Fact Sheet from the Iowa DNR and the Iowa Dept. of Public Health for more information. Here is a list of current fish consumption advisories for Iowa lakes and rivers.
