Ledges State Park, Christmas in July

Meet at Walnut Woods Lodge, 3155 Walnut wood Dr., West Des Moines. 1-mile or 2.5-mile options of moderate difficulty, mostly level. Hike a peaceful walk through bottomland woodland with a portion of the trail located near the Raccoon River. Possible sighting of wintering bald eagles and other winter resident birds and white-tailed deer. Bring a water bottle and wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Meet at Prairie Resource Center, 2820 Brushy Creek Road, Lehigh. Hike is on the easy 2-mile Southeast River Loop.  Hikers will enjoy a hike along the Des Moines River and experience the beauty of the woods in the dead of winter. Hopefully a variety of wildlife will be spotted along the way. Meet at South Bluff Nature Center, 24668 Hwy 52 Bellevue. Depending on weather, hill leading up to nature center can be difficult to traverse. Guided 1.5 mi. hike of moderate difficulty. Get Outdoors on New Year's Day and enjoy a beautiful guided hike on Meadow Trail. The 1.5 mile hike will go by the butterfly garden onto a gently rolling trail loop. Listen to and identify birds. Meet at Waubonsie Park Office for a guided hike of the 1.5 mile Sunset Ridge Trail of moderate difficulty. The entire trail takes about an hour to hike. Wildlife viewing and photo opportunities abound. If snow is present, wind-sculpted drifts will line the edge of the trail. Hot cocoa, coffee and locally baked goodies will be available after the hike. For more information, call the park at 712-382-2786. Meet at EB Lyons Nature Center, 8991 Bellevue Heights, Dubuque. A guided one-mile hike is planned for the Lead Mine and Pine Chapel Trails. Moderate difficulty. Hike through forested areas and a prairie in the lower valley, passing the Pine Chapel, Root Cellar and Wine Cellar of the historic Junkermann farm site.
