Channel catfish move close to shore and are eager to bite in many lakes and the large reservoirs across Iowa just after the ice is gone. The bite starts sooner in the southern Iowa impoundment since they lose ice a week or two before northeast Iowa natural lakes.

Nearly 2,000 archers from more than 120 Iowa schools participated in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) state tournament March 7-8, in Des Moines. For the season, more than 4,000 archers participated in Iowa's National Archery in the Schools After-School League Program. The season ran from December 1, 2019 - February 22, 2020.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has scheduled public meetings in Leon, West Union and Decorah after hunter harvested deer in Decatur, Fayette and Winneshiek counties tested positive for chronic wasting disease. It is the first time deer have tested positive in these counties.

Nearly 2,700 students from more than 90 schools from across Iowa will be in the Richard O. Jacobson Exhibition Center (Bullseye) and the Pioneer Livestock Pavilion (3D) at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines on March 7-8, to participate in the 14th National Archery in the Schools Program State Tournament. This is the largest youth archery tournament in Iowa.

To help producers and contractors, DNR has posted the Construction Certification form which notifies the agency after confinement construction is complete. With the time delay between receiving a construction permit and construction completion, contractors sometimes neglect to certify construction. However, the certification is required before populating any permitted confinement with more than 1,000 animal unit capacity.

Exactly the same as the last two years, 89 of Iowa’s 99 counties plan to use the master matrix to evaluate construction permit applications and proposed sites for animal confinements this year.
