Iowa DNR Keepers of the Land AmeriCorps Program
Since 1999, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Keepers of the Land AmeriCorps program has led nearly 1,000 members in conserving and enhancing our natural resources. AmeriCorps is a national service program that provides Americans of all ages and backgrounds with opportunities to serve their communities.  In Iowa and across the nation, AmeriCorps members have the unique chance to apply skills and ideals toward helping others and meeting community needs.  

AmeriCorps members serve the DNR and its partners by providing:
  • Environmental education
  • Trail restoration
  • Sustainable land use projects
  • Fisheries and Wildlife conservation
  • Habitat enhancement initiatives
  • Volunteer recruitment and involvement in natural resource conservation
DNR Keepers of the Land AmeriCorps positions range from three to twelve months and are available statewide. AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance during their term. In addition, AmeriCorps members who complete a successful term of service are eligible to receive an education award

Position Opening: Trail Crew Leader

The Iowa DNR Trails Program trains, enables and empowers future conservation leaders by teaching sustainable trail building and stewardship techniques, while engaging and teaching AmeriCorps members on the responsible use and care of open space and addressing the needs of Iowa State Parks, Recreation Areas and Preserves. 

Trail Crew Leaders will lead crew members and volunteers performing trail work under the supervision Iowa DNR Trail Program Staff. For more information about AmeriCorps check out http://www.americorps.org

Service Location: State of Iowa Parks, Recreation areas and Preserves
Term of Service: 900 hour: April 21 through October 19

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise, motivate, and coordinate crew members and volunteers as a team
  • Build and maintain trails, lead project management, delegation of tasks, quality control in field and office, maintain positive attitude
  • Coordinate project logistics with Trail Program and park staff.
  • Instruct crew members and volunteers in the safe operation and maintenance of equipment
  • Manage the day-to- day activities of crew members and volunteers under the supervision and support of Trail Program and park staff
  • Serve as role model, facilitator, educate crew members and volunteers on trail work ethic and pace to accomplish task and goals
  • Encourage high ethical and personal standards
  • Provide guidance and support to members in conflict resolution, and team building
  • Communicate with program staff, crew members, and volunteers to ensure the execution of a quality program that is consistent with the IDNR Policies and AmeriCorps requirements
  • Complete weekly timesheets, project accomplishments, and volunteer paperwork
  • Document clear and concise project accomplishments

Trail Crew Leaders are NOT responsible for signing crew member timesheets, evaluating crew member performance, disciplining crew members, enrolling/dismissing crew members, writing and/or signing program reports, managing the program’s payroll and budget.

Skills and Attributes Required:

  • Trail work and leadership experience required
  • Ability to conduct physically strenuous field work in rugged terrain including ability to lift and carry heavy loads up to 50 pounds and hike 5 miles on uneven terrain
  • Ability and willingness to work in all weather conditions
  • Durable sense of humor, enthusiasm, and ability to work hard
  • Ability to maintain a safe and enjoyable work environment under challenging conditions
  • Ability to motivate, teach, and work with people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds
  • Must have a reliable personal vehicle for transportation

Additional Qualifications:

  • Capable of lifting loads up to 70 lbs. for short periods of time.
  • The position requires extensive bending, lifting, pushing, stooping, carrying and other heavy physical labor for extended periods of time.
  • The ability to work cooperatively under stressful working conditions.
  • Must demonstrate teamwork and display high standards of ethical conduct.
  • Willingness and ability to commute and live in a tent at state parks across Iowa for the duration of the summer.
  • The nature of the work environment requires that members utilize appropriate safety equipment such as leather gloves, hardhat, long pants, steel toe boots and protective glasses.
  • Physical ability and willingness to serve outside for 10 hours a day swinging a hand tool with occasional weekend work.
  • Regular, full time attendance is required.
  • Capacity to adjust to change and a durable sense of humor.
  • Ability to produce quality work in a timely manner.
  • Frequently required to walk, hike, sit and talk or listen

An individual must be at least 18 years of age; have a high school diploma or GED; be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien; pass a three-part national service criminal history check of the national sex-offender registry, state repository check, and FBI fingerprint check; and complete all pre-service orientation and training requirements. Documentation of age, education and citizenship are due by the first day of orientation. Criminal history checks will be initiated before the start of service; an individual will be ineligible if s/he is required to register on the National Sex Offender Registry, has been convicted of a violent felony, rape, murder, or fails to disclose any previous conviction. Other convictions or pending charges will be evaluated on a case-by- case basis in accordance with program policy.

Position Opening: Trail Crew

Job Description:
Become part of the national service corps by joining the Iowa DNR AmeriCorps Trail Crew! Restore and maintain trails in Iowa’s state parks. Perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and technical tasks.

  • Restore and construct trails in Iowa’s state parks.
  • Build erosion control structures such as pedestrian bridges, boardwalks, retaining walls, and staircases.
  • Operate and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Recruit and organize volunteers.

AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance and an education award upon successful completion of service.   These positions are funded by an AmeriCorps grant and as such require the successful candidate to complete all of the required activities as outlined in the member handbook and member service agreement. 3 month positions will run from May 19 – August 10, 2016

Living Stipend:$3,479 divided and paid every two weeks ($579 – taxes) during a 3 month (450 hour) term of service plus a $1,527 education award paid upon successful completion of service contract. Additional benefits include free camping, free meals during the work week, deferred student loan payments, and boundless outdoor recreational opportunities.
