DNR Seeking Veterans for New Americorps Program

The DNR is currently accepting applications for the Iowa Green Veterans AmeriCorps program. This new program aids recently returning veterans in their transition to civilian life as while offering the opportunity to learn new job skills.

Members will spend October through March assisting rural, low income and elderly residents to identify and make energy improvements.  Members will learn energy efficiency-related job skills. March through September, members will help with disaster recovery and stewardship activities in Iowa’s state parks.

This AmeriCorps program will connect military veterans with meaningful employment opportunities in the green jobs economy and natural resources. “Our vision for returning veterans who serve in AmeriCorps is to provide hands-on job skill training that will translate into future professional advancement opportunities,” said Dawn Stohs, DNR AmeriCorps program director.

Service sites are in the following Iowa counties: Boone, Cerro Gordo, Delaware, Dickinson, Emmet, Franklin, Linn, Muscatine, Polk, Pottawattamie, Warren and Webster. Positions are open to residents of all counties. Interested applicants can apply at http://americorps.iowadnr.gov under the tab “How to Apply.”

AmeriCorps is a national service program administered through the Corporation for National and Community Service. Each year, AmeriCorps offers adults of all ages and backgrounds more than 75,000 opportunities to meet critical needs in communities across America. Benefits of serving include a modest living allowance, health, dental and vision insurance, and an educational benefit at the end of service.
