Tree Selection

The success of any tree planting project starts by selecting species that are adaptable to the growing conditions present on a particular site. Examples of growing conditions to consider include: soil drainage, available sunlight, aspect (direction site faces), available space, existing trees and plants, and above and underground utilities. This site will allow you to link to information on specific tree species that are adapted to Iowa's growing conditions.

Dear TreeTalk: I moved from Georgia last fall into a house in a new development with a bare front and back yard. My yard in Georgia was full of beautiful southern magnolia and flowering dogwood, so I brought some new trees with me and planted them last fall. I went to a talk at my local Iowa State University Extension office last week, and the speaker mentioned that it was not a good idea to plant trees from the southern United States in north-central Iowa. Does this mean my beautiful new trees are going to die? If these trees do not survive, are there any good flowering trees that will grow in Iowa?
