Tree Planting

Shade trees provide many benefits such as greater beauty, improved air quality, increased energy savings, increased wildlife diversity and habitat, reduction in noise, increased property values, and the creation of a better place to live. If trees are planted improperly they can often become stressed or even die before they can start to provide many of the benefits listed above. There are many aspects of proper tree planting, and this site will link you to information on how to correctly plant a tree in your yard.

Planting a tree

Dear TreeTalk: My husband and I were planting a new container grown bur oak in our backyard last week, when our neighbor who is a self proclaimed tree specialist told us we were not digging our hole deep enough. Our neighbor claimed that if we dug our planting hole at least 2 times the depth of the tree's root ball to loosen up the soil, that the roots would grow deeper and the tree would grow better. My husband and I really like our neighbor, but after he left we started looking at some of his trees in his yard he planted 5 years ago and they really did not look like they have grown that much and a few just do not look healthy. Instead of planting the tree like our neighbor suggested we planted the tree the same depth it came in the pot, and we back-filled the hole with the same soil we dug from the hole. Does our tree have a chance as is, or should we dig it up and start over?

Dear TreeTalk: My wife and I recently moved into a 4 year old house, and there are no trees and shrubs on the property. To tell you the truth I like the open plain look and I love to mow the grass, but my wife thinks a bunch of new trees scattered around the property will spruce up the place so to speak. Since you folks know so much about trees, I told my wife that if you can give me at least three good reasons for planting trees that I would consider digging some holes for new trees this spring. If I do end up having to plant some trees could you tell what size of trees will work best, and what should I look for when selecting trees to purchase?
