Tree Care & Pruning

Utilizing proper care and maintenance techniques throughout the life of a tree can help maintain its health and vigor. A healthy plant is often better able to tolerate potential disease and insect problems. Maintenance activities may include: mulching, watering, staking, monitoring tree health, pruning, and in some cases fertilization. This site will allow you to link to information on a variety of tree care activities, plus you will find information on how to hire a tree care professional to assist you with your trees.

Dear TreeTalk: Two years ago I planted a 6 foot American Linden in my front yard, the tree has grown a few feet and I am tired of ducking to avoid poking my eye balls out every time I mow the lawn. My neighbor told me it was time to cut these lower branches, and that I will actually encourage the tree to grow taller if I remove the branches when they are smaller. My back is really hurting from ducking, but I need to know if it is too early to prune these lower branches?

Dear TreeTalk: Yesterday when I came home from work I found a bright red flyer hanging on my front door telling me that the next time there is a big wind storm that large branches from my mature silver maple will most likely fall on my house. The flyer suggested that topping my tree is the best way to protect my home and garage from being crushed by falling branches. I am now sleeping in my basement on the couch and would like to return to my bed, will topping my tree help me sleep?
